Although/ In spite of/ Despite đều có nghĩa là mặc dù, vị trí của những từ này hay đứng ở đầu mệnh đề. Người ta hay sử dụng nó để làm tăng sức biểu cảm của ngữ cảnh, lời nói, hiện tượng, vấn đề. Although/ In spite of/ Despite thường được sử dụng để ngăn cách 2 mệnh đề với nhau. Nếu đặt ở vị trí đầu câu, sau mệnh đề chứa các từ trên, bắt buộc phải thêm dấu phẩy.
