An exceptionally strong El Nino weather pattern, a warming of ocean surface temperatures in the Pacific, and its ripple effects, has worsened drought condition in southern Africa. As a consequence, The United Nations World Food Programme says that about 14 million people in Southern Africa are facing hunger. The worst affected country is Malawi where 2.8 million people or 16 percent of the population are expected to go hungry.
Migrants traveling through the Balkans toward Western Europe are suffering in the cold as temperatures drop to as low as -20 degrees Celsius. Despite bad weather, an estimated 1,000 people are crossing from Macedonia to Serbia daily. There have been reports of possible cases of frostbite and hypothermia. The organization ‘Save the Children’ says that many migrant children traveling through Serbia are arriving at reception centers with blue lips, shaking from the cold.
Further south, there’s a different picture related to the weather. Unusually mild temperatures in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain resulted in the movement of bears during a period when they normally hibernate. This is a female bear called Caramellita and her three cubs, who were born in 2015. They are being closely monitored by a team of Catalan scientists.
