The European Commission estimates that some three million migrants and refugees are expected to arrive in the European Union by 2017. If integrated into the workforce, the European Commission says, these newcomers could boost EU’s economic output. Meanwhile, the United Nations said that migrants and refugees are likely to keep coming to Europe at a rate of up to 5,000 per day this winter.

In the United States, protesting Hispanic-American groups urged television network NBC to revoke its invitation to Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump who hosted the popular entertainment show Saturday Night Live. Trump outraged many in June when he described Mexican migrants as rapists and drug smugglers. In his campaign events Trump promises that he will, if elected President, build a wall to secure the U.S. border with Mexico and deport millions of immigrants.

Finally, some estimates say that the number of Cuban migrants who have travelled to Mexico as a bridge to reach the United States nearly quintupled in the past year. The main reason for the increase is the fear that Washington will end preferential migratory status for Cubans after restoring relations between the two countries. The entry of Cubans to the United States soared by 78 percent, a little over 27,000 people between October 2014 and June 2015.
